The industry standards for hearth pads (a.k.a floor boards, floor protectors, and wall boards) will be a reality. Currently productions of hearth pads are built to UL subject 1618 and are acceptable for purchase and installation at any time. The two major points are 1618 will only allow R-Value to be measured with non combustible material.

1. Existing Subject 1618 allows the rated R-Value of a floor protector to include combustible material (i.e.
particle board). The new Standard 1618 will only allow R-Value to be measured with non combustible material.

a. Under Subject 1618 a hearth pad built with ¾" particle board would have an R-Value of around 1.18. Under Standard 1618 the same hearth pad would have an R-Value of about 0.03.

b. The hearth pad under Standard 1618 would qualify as a Type I hearth pad- ember protection only.

2. Standard 1618 will allow for two types of hearth pads- Type I (Ember Protection) and Type II (Ember and Thermal Protectors) will have to be tested per the UL Standards 1618.

The new Standard 1618 will require both Type I (Ember Protection) and Type II (Ember & Thermal Protection) will have to be tested per the UL Standard 1618. Some of the bullet points of each.

Type I (Ember Protection)
Certified UL Tested
Type I Labeling

Type II (Ember & Thermal Protection)
Ember Protection
Thermal Protection (R-Value of 1 Min)
Non- Combustible Materials Only
Certified UL Testing Required
Type II Labeling

What you need to know- any stove that requires the floor protection to also provide thermal protection must be installed on a Type II hearth pad, regardless of how small the R-Value required (i.e. R=6) a Type I Hearth pad is not acceptable! In additional, some stove models may require thermal protection that exceeds the R-Value of the hearth pad, in which case a pedestal offering additional R-Value may be required. American Panel Hearth Products has a product or combination of products for any stove installation requirements.

The vast majority of stoves that are manufactured do not require thermal protection we will be offering a Type I hearth pad- please not our new hearth pad will contain only non combustible materials.

Both Type I and Type II contain only non-combustible materials

Both Type I and Type II can be used with pedestal/risers that offer additional thermal value protection (higher R-Value)

Due to the design of our Type II, Installation on carpet is acceptable.
